While growing up in Vosne-Romanée, Cécile Tremblay – grand-niece of sainted Burgundy vigneron Henri Jayer – hated vineyard work. Although neither her parents nor her grandparents were vignerons, the family owned 7ha of vines, which they rented out under sharecropping arrangements.
But when the lease on 3ha of the family’s vines came up for renewal in 2003, Cécile surprised everyone as she set about transforming these once neglected sites into exemplars of fastidious, biodynamic farming, demonstrating exceptional talent as a grower with a great respect for terroir.
Over the next two decades Cécile slowly regained control of some exceptional vineyards across the Côte de Nuits, including old vine 1er Cru parcels in Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, as well as Grand Crus Chapelle-Chambertin and Echezeaux-du-Dessous.
Cécile’s mesmeric Pinot Noirs have become some of Burgundy’s most sought after and difficult to obtain wines. For those that live and breathe Burgundy, there a few greater prizes.
