Taking over from her father Gaston in the 1980s, Ghislaine Barthod has carved out a name as one of the finest vignerons in Chambolle-Musigny, producing ethereal and perfumed Pinot Noirs from an incomparable range of terroirs, including eleven separate 1er Cru bottlings, as well as highly regarded Bourgogne and village wines.
With her son Clément Barthod-Boillot now at the helm and running trials with biodynamics and higher trellising in the vineyard, as well as the use of larger oak and amphorae in the cellar, Domaine Barthod is becoming one the most exciting properties to watch in Chambolle-Musigny.
While 2021 resulted in tiny yields for Clément, resulting in just one or two barrels of some cuvées, he has delivered a finely balanced and vibrant set of wines that will delight Burgundy purists. While the domaine's wines usually need a little time in the cellar to coax out their magic, the already sensuous and graceful 2021s are best enjoyed in the short- to mid-term.
"A well-defined, quite pure bouquet with wild strawberry and cranberry fruit. Medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, tart red fruit with a pretty, orange pith tinged finish. Delicious." Vinous
