Inspired by his numerous trips to the Côte d’Or (including ten vintages spent working with Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac), former Bannockburn winemaker Gary Farr crafts tiny quantities of out-of-this-world Australian Pinot Noir made along Burgundian lines.
Gary and his son Nick farm 11ha of densely-planted vineyards in the Moorabool Valley just outside Geelong and adjacent to his old Bannockburn stomping ground. Fruit is harvested by hand, fermented with up to 50% whole clusters, and then aged in new French oak for 18 months.
Invitingly perfumed with an abundance of juicy, spice-driven fruit alongside polished tannins, New World Pinot Noirs rarely get more finessed than these.
From a north-east-facing slope topped with volcanic soil planted in 2001. Really blossoms with air – fresh raspberries, black tea, and rose petals. Resonates through to the long finish. Drink over the next decade. 94 Points, Wine Advocate
