A few thousand islanders live on Porto Santo, a small, relatively unknown island next to Madeira. Once, they supplied grapes for their neighbour’s wines on a serious scale. Now, just 14 hectares of old vines remain.
This is the setting for a thrilling project from António Maçanita, one of Portugal's most restless winemakers, and his friend Nuno Faria, who shared photos of the island's 80-year-old vines with him during lockdown. Working with traditional grape varieties Caracol, Verdelho and Tinta Negra, they craft vibrant, unfortified wines with a saline, Atlantic edge.
