The life of a Mosel Valley winemaker is not easy: long hours spent tending vines on treacherous slate hillsides, and in return relatively low prices that barely cover high production costs. The good news for winos everywhere is that these are some of the best value fine wines on the planet.
Selbach-Oster is a venerable Mosel estate making a whole assortment of dazzlingly complex Rieslings, from bone dry to sweet. Johannes and Barbara Selbach farm 24h of vines across Zeltingen (Himmelreich, Sonnenuhr and Schlossberg) and Graach (Himmelreich and Domprobst). The wines are fermented slowly in old oak foudres and stainless steel. Even with bottle age, prices are more than reasonable for the quality on offer.
