Henry Pellé is redefining expectations of Sauvignon Blanc from Menetou-Salon with beautifully composed, yet understated wines that speak to the essence of place – and can actually age!
The domaine was established in the mid-20th century by the ambitious young Henry Pellé, who was convinced of the rich quality of his terroirs in Menetou-Salon Morogues – an area of contiguous limestone vineyards 10 miles west of Sancerre. The estate is now in the hands of Henry’s grandson, Paul-Henry, who uses organic farming techniques and minimalist winemaking to vinify his Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes.
From a 1.2ha monopole parcel of Sauvignon Blanc planted by selection massale on flinty silex soils in 1976, ‘Le Carroir’ is fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels. The 2014’s bright, herbal stone fruit aromatics give way to a beautifully sinewy and savoury palate that’s packed with energy. Brilliant value.
