Committed to revitalising the vineyards of Emilia-Romagna’s Predappio region and its native Sangiovese clone, Chiara Condello is a gifted young vigneron whose wines are not to be missed.

After completing an economics degree in Milan, Chiara decided to spend the summer helping at her family’s winery before starting on the corporate ladder – but feeling at home among the vines, she decided instead to embark on a career in wine.

In 2015, Chiara saw enormous potential in the old, forest-adjacent vineyards in the foothills of the Apennines which their owners had intended to pull up. She gradually bought up small parcels and now farms 10ha of Sangiovese di Predappio – a thick-skinned Sangiovese clone native to the region, which produces gorgeous wines with fruit-forward aromatics.

While Chiara’s single-vineyard cuvée ‘Le Lucciole' Riserva has carved out a place as one of Romagna’s top wines, her Sangiovese Predappio provides astonishing value at £25. A blend of three vineyards fermented in open-top containers and aged in large vessels, it offers waves of spicy, whole-cluster fruit and powdery tannins on a powerful frame. 92+ Points, Vinous
