Jurançon local Lionel Osmin has spent years championing the under-appreciated wines of South West France. His négociant business, Lionel Osmin & Cie, is behind an array of wines that highlight the region’s most interesting vineyards and rarest grape varieties, and the growers who look after them.
In Jurançon, Lionel works with the Barrère family, who founded their domaine in the 1940s and farm old vineyards around Lahourcade and Cuqueron. Today, Anne-Marie Barrère runs the estate with her sister Christiane. Traditionally, the best vineyards were used to make dessert wine, but that’s changing. Working with local varieties Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng, and vines that are between 40 and 100 years old, the estate now produces a dazzling range of Jurançon Sec - bone dry wines that combine exotic aromas with a saline, mineral quality - as well as a classic sweet white.
