Talloulah Dubourg and Hugo Mathurin of Domaine de Cassiopée are among a group of bold outsiders re-energising Burgundy with single-minded determination. This dynamic winemaking duo – not yet in their 30s – honed their craft alongside some of Burgundy’s most esteemed producers, including Freddie Mugnier and Jean-Marc Roulot.
Their windy, forest-adjacent plots in Maranges in the very south of the Côte de Beaune were traditionally regarded as too cold to produce much of interest. However, amid a backdrop of climate change and rising local temperatures, Talloulah and Hugo saw huge potential in these old-vine parcels of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Aligoté.
Taking a biodynamic, minimalist approach, Cassiopée is making some of the region’s most expressive wines.
The jewel in their crown is ‘Les Plantes’, a plot of 110-year-old Pinot Noir surrounding the family home, matching a rich perfume of forest fruits and roses with a silky texture with mineral clarity.
A lifted perfume of sweet red berries threaded with exotic floral and spice notes. Bright and energetic, showing lip-smacking fruit purity and fine, supple tannins.
