Jean-François Ganevat is the superstar vigneron who has transformed the Jura from an obscure appellation into one of the world’s most exciting contemporary wine regions.
After studying in Beaune and working as cellar master at Domaine Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet, Ganevat returned home to Rotalier in 1998 to take over his father’s estate. Converting the land first to organic farming, then to biodynamics in 2006, he has slowly grown his holdings in and around the hamlet of La Combe from 8.5ha to 13ha.
Ganevat ferments all five of the Jura’s grape varieties – Savagnin, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Trousseau, and Poulsard – to produce an ever-evolving array of Burgundian-inspired ouillé (“topped up”) and traditional sous voile (“under flor”) cuvées, as well as other local specialities. Seductive, nuanced, and capable of long ageing, they rank among France’s top tier.
To combat the disastrously low yields of recent vintages and to keep up with the overwhelming demand for the domaine’s tiny output, Jean-François and his sister Anne also craft an assortment of négociant bottlings made using Jura fruit and grapes from elsewhere.
A cult name among sommeliers and highly sought-after in natural wine circles, there are few harder allocations to secure than Ganevat. Shrine to the Vine is thrilled to offer this parcel of the latest releases from the domaine.
Chardonnay from 65+-year-old vines grown on grey marl and aged for 30 months on its lees. Super expressive and smoky with seamless acidity.
