If you want great value in wine, where should you look? We love discovering a new, niche corner of the wine world, but some of the best bargains we’ve come across are from much closer to home - in familiar regions, unjustly overlooked.

Alsace has been unfashionable for years, and whenever we taste its top wines we wonder why. The region produces some of the finest, longest-lived whites going. But because it’s currently out of favour, sometimes you find beautifully mature bottles from even the region’s best producers at ridiculously low prices.

We have just received a parcel of Zind Humbrecht’s Pinot d’Alsace from the outstanding 2000 vintage. Olivier Humbrecht was France’s first Master of Wine, and crafts some of Alsace’s very best artisanal bottles from biodnyamically farmed vines. This beautiful, dry white is a blend of 50% Auxerrois, 35% Chardonnay, and 15% Pinot Blanc. It has been maturing slowly for 25 years, and is now at its peak - offering textural richness, layers of complexity and great energy.
