A master winemaker at the top of his game, Frédéric (Freddy) Mugnier crafts some of Burgundy's most silken, multidimensional and frankly transcendent Pinot Noirs in miniscule quantities.
The fifth-generation of the Mugnier family, Freddy took over the domaine in 1985. By reclaiming the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 'Clos de la Maréchale' vineyard in 2004 (previously leased to Domaine Faiveley) he increased the family's existing holdings to 14ha, including old vines in Chambolle-Musigny villages, 1er Crus 'Les Fuées' and 'Les Amoureuses', and Grands Crus 'Bonnes-Mares' and 'Musigny'.
Freddy is guided by a pragmatic engineering background as well as a detailed, rigorous approach to farming. A blend of two old parcels in La Combe d'Orveau and 1er Cru 'Les Plantes', Mugnier village Chambolle-Musigny combines the domaine's hallmark floral aromatics and vibrant red fruit with fine tannins, while 1er Cru 'Les Fuées' and 1er Cru 'Les Amoureuses' (widely regarded as Grand Cru-level) are striking for their depth of fruit and weightless transparency.
Although approachable in youth, the Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Clos de la Maréchale' is built with a structure for long ageing and offers power and finesse. From vines planted between 1947 and 1962, the domaine's sublime 'Musigny' has become a lodestar for the appellation.
