Talloulah Dubourg and Hugo Mathurin of Domaine de Cassiopée are re-imagining the potential of Maranges, one of Burgundy’s humble outlier appellations in the deep south of the Côte de Beaune.
Honing their crafts at Domaines Mugnier and Roulot, 20-somethings Talloulah and Hugo saw the potential of Maranges’ windy, forest-adjacent plots – an appellation traditionally regarded as being too cool to produce ‘fine’ wines, meaning that crops were usually sold off in bulk.
Since taking over the domaine in January 2020, the couple’s dedication to high quality organic farming techniques has transformed these underrated, old-vine hillsides into one of Burgundy’s most exciting terroirs and inspired other vignerons to purchase land there.
While the jewel in their crown is ‘Les Plantes’ – a plot of 110-year-old vines surrounding the family home – Talloulah and Hugo also farm Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on two slopes of limestone and granite facing each other in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, as well as ancient Aligoté vines in Maranges-Sampigny and Chassey-le-Camp.
Domaine de Cassiopée’s 2022s offer a beautifully expressive fruit character off-set by crystalline clarity and freshness – now is your opportunity to discover this brilliant young domaine.
110-year-old Pinot Noir behind the domaine. Meaty and sumptuous with gorgeous tannins.
