Just eleven days out of oenology school, the 24-year-old (and then-unknown) David Croix was installed as winemaker at Maison Camille Giroud – a stroke of genius from the house’s new investors, which included US importer and all-round wine legend Becky Wasserman, as well as Napa vintner Ann Colgin.
The immensely talented David brought this old and rather tired négociant house back from the brink with a major revamp of the winery and, by introducing old barrels and whole-bunch fermentations, began to craft beautifully expressive Pinot Noirs in touch with contemporary tastes, while maintaining Giroud’s legacy for wines of long ageing potential.
We love elegant red Burgundy vintages – sadly, seeming to be a thing of the past – at Rotter Towers. Deep, earthy aromatics meld with raspberry, smoked meat, and liquorice. Juicy and intense, with staggering depth of fruit, this is now finally unfurling its wings. 91-94 Points, Vinous
