Yvon Métras

18 November 2021

Yvon Métras is one of the most revered names in French wine. A diligent farmer and a winemaking purist who took over his family’s vines in the 1980s, Métras practises methodologies similar to natural wine’s founding father Jules Chauvet to obtain the best quality fruit from his modest five hectares. Alongside the Gang of Four, no one has done more to champion Beaujolais as a region for serious, ageworthy wine.

Métras’ wines have that hallmark brightness and purity of fruit which you only find in great Cru Beaujolais: these are genuine fine wines – a world apart from Nouveau and hauntingly reminiscent of Burgundy – that just happen to be made from Gamay. Tightly knit in youth, with a few years in bottle they unfold, their perfume and intensity building, and strike a delicate balance between lightness and weight.

Popular with Beaujolais enthusiasts and much sought-after in natural wine circles, there are few harder allocations to secure than Yvon Métras. As a result, these bottles are rarely seen on the shelf. Shrine to the Vine has a handful of each cuvée, so move quickly to avoid missing out.
