Sadie Family Wines (2022)
A winemaker dedicated to the restoration of old vineyards across the Western Cape for over two decades, Eben Sadie has almost singlehandedly put South Africa on the contemporary fine wine map.
After graduating from Stellenbosch agricultural school, an eight-year journey of discovery took Eben through the great vineyard sites of Europe and instilled in him an obsession with terroir. On returning home he headed up Charles Back’s Spice Route winery before launching Sadie Family Wines in 1999 (as well as co-founding Priorat’s Terroir Al Límit in 2001).
Today, Eben meticulously farms 24ha of Western Cape vines across a wide range of grape varieties, including Syrah, Chenin Blanc, Palomino, Cinsault, and Tinta Barroca. Harvested at extremely low yields and sorted by hand, Sadie’s wines are fermented with native yeasts and aged in a variety of vessels, including oak barrels, amphorae, and cement tanks.
Columella (a powerful Syrah-based red from eight Swartland parcels) and Palladius (an aromatic blend of 11 white varieties with Chenin Blanc playing the starring role) are the domaine’s flagships, while the wines in Eben’s Old Vine Series are the ultimate expressions of South Africa’s most ancient vineyard sites. Although beautifully expressive and refined in youth, these are bottles that will show their true greatness with age.
Must-haves for drinkers and collectors alike – and now one of the New World’s hardest releases to secure – we are excited to offer our yearly allocation from the domaine.
