Philine Isabel

5 May 2022
“I was blown away by the 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo from Philine Isabelle. It embodies everything that is old-school, everything that is classic, about Piedmont.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

A young German with an infectious charm reminiscent of her compatriot football-meister Jürgen Klopp, Shrine to the Vine was also wowed by Philine Isabelle Dienger’s first vintage when we visited Monforte earlier this year. Having been helped by her friends at Rinaldi to lease part of Barolo’s celebrated Preda vineyard, Philine is a future star of Piedmontese winemaking, drawing upon the best of both traditional and modern techniques.

Growing up in her native Germany, Philine inherited her father’s passion for wine by tasting widely from his extensive cellar, spending her twenties learning at leading biodynamic estates and working with specialist vineyard consultants Simonit & Sirch. In 2019, Philine relocated to Piedmont to start her own micro-project, initially sourcing fruit from top growers and making wines at Rinaldi, and has since moved into her own winery.

The fine wines of Piedmont are currently enjoying a surge in interest: allocations are tight and prices ever rising. One of the most exciting new additions to the region, Philine Isabelle is a name to follow over the coming years.

Langhe Chardonnay 2019 Sold out
Grown in the lower part of Preda – aged in concrete
Notes of honeyed stone fruit and lemon butter – more than a nod to Burgundy. Its generous, silky frame is balanced by mineral tension and fresh acidity.

Dolcetto d’Alba 2019  Sold out
Sourced from south-west facing slopes in Diano d’Alba
Immediately inviting, expressive, and fruit-driven Dolcetto: sweet dark berries, crushed flowers, bitter almonds. Ethereal and almost weightless in texture.

Barbera d’Alba 2019 Sold out
Grown in Monforte. Matured half in steel and half in barrel
Fragrant red berries contrast some typical Piedmontese savouriness and vibrant acidity. Charming and serious in equal measure.

Langhe Nebbiolo 2019 Sold out
From sandy vineyards in Castagni at 450m elevation
Stunning, old-school, rose-and-tar Nebbiolo, with fine, dusty tannins and lively acidity. “Off the charts, a fabulous debut”, 94 points – Antonio Galloni. Drink to 2034.
