Jules Desjourneys (2019)
A Burgundian who started out as an agent for some of the region’s most famous names – Coche-Dury, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Arnaud Ente – Fabien Duperray only started life as winemaker at the end of the 2000s, but his Domaine Jules Desjourneys wines are already in the top echelon.
To gnarly old Gamay vineyards in Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent acquired in 2007, Fabien added 10ha of Chardonnay from select sites across the Mâconnais in 2014. Farming follows biodynamic principles, work is done by hand, and yields are very low in order to create the purest wines possible.
All Fabien’s whites are fermented in custom-made glass globes, an idea he developed alongside Arnaud Ente, which has captured the imagination of other top white wine producers around the world. The exception is his Pouilly-Fuissé and Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vignes Blanches’, which are vinified using what he calls the “Coche method” (using oak and long lees-ageing).
With their crystalline purity and natural generosity, there is a drinkability to Fabien’s wines that makes it difficult to resist pulling their corks immediately – however, like the top Burgundies Fabian is so familiar with, these are bottles that will age for the long term.
Shrine to the Vine’s very first offer was a small parcel of Desjourneys’s 2018 Pouilly-Vinzelles ‘Les Longeays’, so we are thrilled to now offer all the domaine’s white wines from the exceptional 2019 Burgundy vintage.
For Burg-lovers searching for superlative quality and affordability, these are hard to beat.
