Jules Desjourneys
25 October 2021
Domaine Jules Desjourneys – a.k.a owner/vigneron Fabien Duperray – has had a meteoric rise over the last few years. A Burgundian who started out as an agent for some of the region’s most famous names – Coche-Dury, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Arnaud Ente – before moving operations to an old train station in La Chapelle-de-Guinchay, Fabien began life as a winemaker at the end of the 2000s, and is perfectly connected to develop his craft.
For Burg-lovers searching for superlative quality and affordability Desjourneys wines are hard to beat, although tiny production volumes make them increasingly scarce. Duperray farms biodynamically and ferments his whites in custom made glass globes, lending the wines a crystalline purity that balances the natural generosity of the Maconnais.
'Les Longeays’ is arguably the best vineyard in Pouilly-Vinzelles and rumoured to be among the contenders to be granted 1er Cru status. It's a wine that demonstrates the huge potential of this southern stretch of Burgundy, delicious to drink now or cellar for another 5 to 8 years.
Pouilly-Vinzelles 'Les Longeays' 2018 (£45) Sold out
"The 2018 Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays opens in the glass with generous aromas of pear, gooseberry, Meyer lemon, melon and peach, framed by inviting hints of warm bread and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's fine-boned and open, with bright acids and a gently honeyed finish. It's charming and immediate this year." 93 Points.
