Jean-Pierre Guyon

3 March 2022

“Live happy, live hidden” is Jean-Pierre’s Guyon motto. Overlooked until recently, even by Burgundy enthusiasts, Guyon has been quietly making some of the Côte de Beaune’s most sumptuous reds hidden in plain sight.

Based in Vosne-Romanée, Jean-Pierre organically farms six hectares, including the prestigious Echézeaux and Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru vineyards. However, his wines from Savigny prove the potential of this underrated Côte de Beaune village, not to mention his own unsung talent.

Guyon’s wines are classical and terroir-driven Pinot Noirs, perfumed and velvet-textured with a suave, savoury edge. ‘Les Planchots’ is a lieu dit of 50-year-old vines running adjacent to the Rhoin river, its sunny exposure resulting in a rich wine with wild berry notes and fine tannins. ‘Les Peuillets’ – a gently sloping, 60-year-old, 1er Cru site – is seamlessly layered with sweet fruit, smoky and floral tones.

Sourced directly from the cellars of the domaine, where these bottles have been maturing for a decade since the excellent 2012 vintage, this parcel is one of those rare finds: Burgundy that is sensibly priced, perfectly stored, and ready-to-drink – an opportunity too good to miss.
