Jean-Marie Fourrier
Jean-Marie Fourrier’s classy Bourgogne Rouge is a gateway to exploring the brilliance of this starry Burgundy domaine at a fraction of the price of its coveted single-site Gevrey-Chambertins.
Prior to taking over from his father in 1994, Jean-Marie interned for the legendary Vosne-Romanée vigneron Henri Jayer and then with Véronique Drouhin in Oregon. On returning to the family domaine, Jean-Marie put considerable efforts into renovating the cellars and introducing lower yields and elements of biodynamic farming to his exceptional old-vine holdings in and around Gevrey.
In addition to the 1er and Grand Cru domaine bottlings for which he has become famed, Jean-Marie collaborates with a handful of growers for his eponymous micro-négociant cuvées. By working only with vineyards local to the domaine, Jean-Marie oversees all aspects of farming and harvesting to achieve top-quality fruit grown to his exacting standards.
A blend of grapes from Côte de Nuits sources, fruit for Jean-Marie’s Bourgogne Rouge is destemmed before fermentation with native yeasts and ageing in French oak for 12 months. Punching leagues above its ‘entry-level’ classification, it offers seductive red fruit and saline minerality alongside the domaine’s signature plush texture. Although immediately delicious, it will gain further complexity over the next decade.
With Jean-Marie’s top wines acquiring a devoted following among Burgundy collectors and now reaching prices well into three figures, this mini-vertical of his Bourgogne Rouge – from a trio of excellent vintages – demonstrates why Fourrier is at the very top of his game.
