“Stunning wines with all the freshness and character of the Jura’s best, like polished diamonds” – Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com

Dining at Le Taillevent in Paris, Guillaume d’Angerville – proprietor of the quintessential Volnay domaine Marquis d’Angerville – was handed a mystery glass by the sommelier. Complex and delicious, he thought it was from the Côte de Beaune. A Meursault 1er Cru, perhaps? But no, it was Stephane Tissot’s stunning Chardonnay ‘Les Bruyères’ from the Jura, and at that moment Guillaume was convinced of the region’s potential.

A decade on and Guillaume has created one of the Jura’s foremost estates: Domaine du Pélican combines the winemaking experience of a great Burgundian dynasty with terroirs acquired from a rollcall of Jura legends, including Jean-Marc Brignot, Robert Aviet, and Jacques Puffeney.

Overseen by François Duvivier, Guillaume’s long-time estate manager at Marquis d’Angerville, biodynamic farming and a lightness of touch in the winery results in thrilling, elegant wines that Guillaume wants to be “drunk, not tasted”.

Savagnin is famed for making Vin Jaune, Jura’s oxidative speciality, but here it is produced in the ouillé (“topped up”) style. Herbal freshness is balanced by ripe fruit and a reductive minerality, giving a wine that is as powerful as it is precise.

‘Trois Cépages’ is a blend of Jura’s three red grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Trousseau and Poulsard. Aged for 10 months in barrel, it is concentrated, silky and fruit forward with vibrant red berry character that has gained savoury complexity with age.

Marquis d’Angerville’s wines are among the most celebrated in Burgundy, and by comparison Domaine du Pélican represents extraordinary value. Finding mature bottles from their early vintages is getting increasingly difficult, but Shrine to the Vine has secured three cases of the excellent 2015s, which are now drinking beautifully.
