Comtesse de Chèrisey

“A small, but excellent set of 2019s from Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey – taut, livewire Chardonnays so nervy that they seem to be plugged into the mains" – Neal Martin, Vinous

In the hamlet of Blagny – a lesser-known Burgundy village ensconced further up the hill between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet – Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey is producing exceptional wines that are among the most exciting in the Côte de Beaune.

Laurent and Hélène Martelet recently passed the domaine onto the 7th generation – their daughter Bérénice and her husband Rémi Colin (the nephew of Arnaud Ente, one of the contemporary masters of Meursault).

Using scrupulous organic farming techniques, they tend 9ha of old Chardonnay vines across some of Burgundy’s highest 1er Cru vineyards – a cool microclimate now highly prized amid a backdrop of rising local temperatures.

Fermented and aged in barrels made from the oak forests surrounding their vineyards, Comtesse de Chérisey’s wines are silky and seductive but marked by razor-sharp freshness. Bottled without fining or filtration, they spend three years in the domaine’s cellars before release.

A blend of fruit from the estate’s steepest plots, Meursault ‘Bois de Blagny’ is pure and lacy and tingles with energy. The Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru ‘La Genelotte’ – a monopole which they own outright – is powerful and chiselled. A 1ha plot planted in the 1950s, the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Hameau de Blagny’ offers lifted aromatics and a long, spicy finish.

Until recently the domaine was something of an insider’s tip, but the reputation of Comtesse de Chérisey grows every year. This tiny, but brilliant vintage is full of cellaring potential.
