Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin 'Mes Favorites' 2014
Alain Burguet has built one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most compelling domaines from scratch. Now, Jean-Luc and Eric are carrying on their father’s legacy for crafting layered, complex, delicious Pinot Noirs.
Born into a family of growers, Alain was put to work full-time in the vineyard from the age of 14. After military service, he returned to Burgundy and gradually purchased old-vine plots from retiring vignerons across 9.5ha of some of Gevrey’s finest lieux-dits.
Since taking over the domaine in 2011, Jean-Luc and Eric – apprentices of Domaines Denis Bachelet and Henri Gouges – have taken their father’s pioneering organic work up a notch. By introducing biodynamic farming and later picking, as well as meticulously ‘triple sorting’ their grapes, they are bringing out more precision and purity in the wines.
The domaine has forged a reputation for ‘Mes Favorites’ – a blend of more than 18 low-yielding parcels planted between 1910 and 1990. After spending 20 months in a combination of old and new barrels, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
From an exceptional vintage for red Burgundy, the 2014 is silky and voluptuous, its dark berry fruit laced with woodsmoke and savoury spice. Already drinking brilliantly, it will gain further complexity over the next decade.
A cuvée that has appeared on many three-star restaurant wine lists in France, ‘Mes Favorites’ is treasured by sommeliers and critics alike. With allocations usually selling out en primeur, it is rare to see Burguet’s wines with bottle age – rarer still to see a stellar vintage at this market beating price.
