Benoît Moreau

3 November 2022
“Benoît Moreau is hitting the ground running – a new star has been added to Chassagne” – William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Under the charge of brothers Benoît and Alex Moreau, Domaine Bernard Moreau rose to become one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s most respected addresses. From 2020 the brothers have decided to divide the holdings and go it alone and, after 22 vintages, Benoît is immediately turning heads with a sensational maiden vintage under his own name.

Benoît farms 4ha in Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, including distinguished 1er Cru sites inherited from his father, as well as new climats created by dividing existing vineyards. Utilising a biodynamic farming approach and tressage – the laborious and highly skilled practice of braiding the vine canopy – Benoît excels as a terroir-focused Chardonnay grower.

In his brand-new cellar in Chassagne, Benoît’s wines undergo slow pressing and fermentation using indigenous yeasts, before spending 18 months in barrel. The seductive aromatics and supple textures are underscored by incredible energy and mineral tension. Already delicious in youth, the consummate balance of the wines suggests they all have considerable ageing potential.

Sourcing tiny quantities of exquisite fruit from friends and trusted growers for his first vintage, Benoit’s 2020s prove that he, along with the likes of Lamy-Caillat and Paul Pillot, is among the wineries raising the bar in Chassagne-Montrachet. These are only bottles on the UK market from this true star in the making – get them while you can.

Chassagne-Montrachet 2020 (£90) Sold out
A blend of plots in the north and south. Layered with ripe pear, blossom, flint, and nutmeg, the satin-soft texture is braced by tangy acidity and citrus bitters. Clear 1er Cru level. Drink to 2032.

Saint-Aubin 1er Cru ‘Les Champlots’ 2020 (£95) Sold out
