In 1976, Jean-Marie Guffens – AKA ‘the crazy Belgian’ – moved to Burgundy with his wife Maine Heynen and purchased Mâcon-Pierreclos, a vineyard no one wanted because it was too steep. Later in the 1990s, they established Verget as a négociant arm. 'Les Combes' Vieilles Vignes is the jewel of Jean-Marie's Verget bottlings. Though not awarded 1er Cru status (perhaps unfairly), the wines produced here are of the highest quality. This combines notes of confit lemon, smoke, and earthy spice. Concentrated, fresh, and layered, this is Mâconnais of the highest order.
