“The wild man of Pouilly”, “the Pope of Sauvignon”, an iconoclast, a maverick, a magician – Didier Dagueneau is much missed since his untimely death in 2008. But his family domaine lives on to produce some of the world’s most transcendent, singular Sauvignon Blanc.
Silex – Dagueneau’s flagship wine, named after Pouilly-Fumé’s flint-clay soils – is made from a single parcel of biodynamic vines on the Saint-Andlaint hill. Louis-Benjamin continues to champion his father’s pioneering techniques and obsession with using low yields of hand-harvested, fully ripe fruit to produce ageworthy, Grand Cru-level wines.
Silex’s powerful, concentrated citrus fruit is detailed with smoky white pepper notes and gunflint minerality. Silky, generous and immediately seductive, the palate is framed by precise, crystalline acidity. The outstanding 2020 vintage is just beginning to show its promise, but its complexity will continue to develop over the next decade. This is Sauvignon Blanc that redefines its category.
