Made from late-picked Grenache grapes that are fortified and brought up to a natural degree that they would have reached if fermented out fully, these Vin Doux Naturels are then aged in glass bonbonnes and large oak foudres for decades. Philippe Gayral (dubbed “The Archiviste of the Roussillon” by Jancis Robinson) has been going round the old domaines of the area buying up barrels and releasing tiny quantities of these rare gems. Expressive of tobacco smoke, dried figs and citrus, this is broad and sweet, but with some piercing acidity that cuts right through the denseness.
Once opened the bottle will last for at least 6 months and usually up to a year.
