There’s arguably never been a better time to drink Oregon Pinot Noir. While each Burgundy vintage delivers a fresh climatic slap in the face for growers and prices continue to rise, the gods smile upon Oregon with an unprecedented run of outstanding vintages since 2014.
One such winemaker reaping these rewards is third-generation Willamette Valley producer Jim Maresh, who continues his family’s legacy with site-specific wines made from old, own-rooted vines planted in the 1970s. But his brilliant, ‘village-level’ Dundee Hills bottling – “one of the best entry-level Pinots in the US,” according to Vinous – should not be overlooked.
The 2018 is powerful and succulent with notes of dark cherry, sous bois, and smoke off-set by grainy tannins and juicy acidity, ensuring good capacity for ageing. 93 points from Wine Advocate to boot.
