Italian wine is complicated. Never mind Burgundy, whose intricacies are often seen as wine culture’s most insurmountable cliff-face, the Bel Paese’s wine landscape – with its daunting numbers of unusual grape varieties and vehement local differences of opinion – has left us scratching our heads far more frequently. But the more we explore Italy, the more enamoured we become of its amazing artisanal domaines, from Tuscany’s Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, to Piemonte, Friuli, Abruzzo, Umbria and Mount Etna.
