Made from late-picked Grenache grapes that are fortified and brought up to a natural degree that they would have reached if fermented out fully, these Vin Doux Naturels are then aged in glass bonbonnes and large oak foudres for decades. Philippe Gayral (dubbed “The Archiviste of the Roussillon” by Jancis Robinson) has been going round the old domaines of the area buying up barrels and releasing tiny quantities of these rare gems. With its creamy texture, the 1955 has a distinctly nutty quality - almost rancio-like - and a savoury, earthiness to the finish.
Once opened the bottle will last for at least 6 months and usually up to a year.
